The Great Almaty Lake (BAO) is one of the most beautiful natural places in the vicinity of Almaty. Located at an altitude of 2,510 meters above sea level, it impresses with its rich turquoise waters, mountain landscapes and peaceful atmosphere. What is important for a tourist to know: Location: about 30 km from the center of Almaty. Travel time is 1-1.5 hours by car. The last section of the road is steep and serpentine. Features: The lake is a protected area because it is used as a source of drinking water for the city. Swimming and picnics on the shore are prohibited. The best views are from the observation deck next to the road leading to the observatory. When to go: from June to October. In summer, the water is the brightest, and in autumn, the landscapes turn golden. What to bring: warm clothes (it's cool in the mountains even in summer), water, a camera and a good mood. Recommendations: The ascent may be limited by a boom gate โ€” check in advance the accessibility of the road. There are fewer tourists and traffic jams on weekdays. Nearby you can visit the Tien Shan Astronomical Observatory or go hiking in the mountains. Big Almaty Lake is an ideal place for a short field trip from Almaty, where nature speaks for itself. Don't forget to charge your phone โ€” the photos will be incredible!
